Things to Consider before Adopting a Cat

girl_with_cat_kissesCats make fantastic pets. They are less demanding than dogs, and can usually easily adjust to different types of living spaces and lifestyles. Every cat has its own individual personality though, so it’s important for you to take your time when choosing your furry companion. Here are some things that you need to consider before adopting a cat.

Everyone that lives in the home should be on board and prepared for adopting a cat. When going to the shelter or pet store, the whole family should be there and involved in the decision of choosing. If you already have a pet at home, please talk to a veterinarian or the adoption facility on making a proper introduction.
Make sure you have room in your budget for adopting a cat, short and long term. There is a cost connected to the responsibility of owning a cat. Most of the time, adopting from the shelters will save you money, as they have already vaccinated, neutered or spayed, and microchipped the kitty. Your new family member will cost you in other ways to such as food, litter, treats, and toys. They will also need to continue to get vaccinated, sometimes annually, depending on the area in which you live.

Think about adopting two cats. Cats require mental stimulation, exercise, and social interaction. If you have two cats, they can provide all of that, and more for each other.

Are they meowing for attention, comfortably lying about, or cowering in a corner? When you see one that you think you may like, ask to hold them or see if you can go to a separate room for some individual time with them. Does the cat seem comfortable being held; is it active, playful, and alert? Ultimately you need to decide which cat’s disposition is right for you.

It’s most important to remember that you are making a lifetime commitment for that cat, which could be anywhere from 10 to 20 years. Keeping that in mind, choose carefully, and in a whisk of a tail you’ll know the joy of having a cat.
