Are You Ready for Dog Adoption?

AdoptingDogTips-228x300Adopting a dog is a big event. You are bringing an animal into your home, and barring any accidents, it will be living with you for the next 8 to 15 years or more. You want to be sure that you are ready. Before you start the dog adoption process, take the time to determine if you are really ready for the commitment it entails.

Puppy Proofing

If you want a puppy, you want to be prepared to have a puppy in your home. Puppies chew, and puppies get into things. So, don’t be suan also chew on the cords for your appliances. Puppies need constant monitoring any time they are not confined to rprised if your puppy destroys something that you leave on the floor. This could be anything from phones to shoes. They ca safe location. You want to take the time puppy proof an area of your home so that your puppy will have a safe place to play.

Potty Training

Potty training also takes time. You will need to take your new puppy outside often to help reduce the number of accidents in the house. Puppies, like babies, go to the bathroom often, and you might have to get up in the middle of the night. If you don’t have a fenced in yard, this means that you will have to walk your puppy on a leash. Even adult dogs need to go outside at least three or four times a day, and you will have to walk it each time. It’s inevitable that your puppy will have a few accidents inside the house. So, if you are really attached to your brand new carpets, you will want to keep your puppy confined to the kitchen for at least the first few days.

Puppies Are Expensive

You will have to buy a collar, a leash, bowls, food, a carrier, flea/tick/heartworm protection, toys, and more. You will also have to pay for your puppy’s shots and any vet care that your puppy might need.

Before you begin the dog adoption process, really take the time to determine if you truly want a dog.
