Adopting A Cat From An Animal Shelter

Persian cat

Are you looking for a new feline companion? If so, your local animal shelter is a great place to start your search. This organization will have a variety of cats and kittens available for adoption, and these will be animals that people have abandoned or those have been picked up as strays. Adopting a cat is usually an easy process, and it can be easily completed in an afternoon. However, it never hurts to give yourself some time when adopting a new pet.

Gather Information

One of the first things that you want to do is call your shelter and see what the requirements for adopting a cat are. Generally, you just have to fill out an application. You can often do this online. These applications typically ask where you live, where you plan to keep the cat (indoors or outdoors), how many pets you have, how many pets have you owned in the past, etc. Some of these organizations might refuse your application if you say that you are going to keep your cat outside.

Meet the Kitties

Once you have completed an application and it has been approved, you can visit the cats. While many people prefer to adopt kittens, you should consider adopting an older cat, as they are typically calmer. Many rescue organizations have a hard time adopting out older cats, and some organizations do not keep older cats as long as they will keep kittens. Some organizations may let you play with the cats so that you can see which one you like the best.

Bring Your New Addition Home

If you already have other cats, make introductions slowly. It’s not uncommon for cats to tussle with each other for a few days before they get used to the new routine. It’s a good idea to feed the cats separately and provide two litter boxes at least until the cats are used to one another. After a few weeks, the new cats will usually become accustomed to one another.
